چکیده

The sensitivity of the magneto-optical Kerr response to electronic thermalization processes in ultrafast pump–probe experiments is studied by evaluating the complex conductivity tensor of Ni for non-equilibrium electron distributions. The electronic structure and optical matrix elements are calculated within density functional theory. To account for the electronic redistributions generated by the intense pump-laser pulse during the initial stages of electronic thermalization, two kinds of model electron distributions are considered which mimic the so-called dichroic bleaching or state-blocking effect. Thus, certain optical transitions which are allowed under equilibrium conditions are not accessible to the probe laser. It is shown that the conductivity tensor and the complex Kerr angle can be modified substantially by the nonequilibrium electron distributions. Moreover, in striking contrast to the case for ordinary equilibrium conditions, the Kerr rotation and ellipticity are no longer proportional to the magnetization of the sample. The Kerr response at ultrashort times can therefore not be taken as a measure of demagnetization. (Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version)

Influence of laser-excited electron distributions on the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra: Implications for femtosecond demagnetization in Ni

In pump-probe experiments an intensive laser pulse creates non-equilibrium excited electron distributions in the first few hundred femtoseconds after the pulse. The influence of non-equilibrium electron distributions caused by a pump laser on the apparent X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signal of Ni is investigated theoretically here for the first time, considering electron distributio...

The influence of the excitation pulse length on ultrafast magnetization dynamics in nickel

The laser-induced demagnetization of a ferromagnet is caused by the temperature of the electron gas as well as the lattice temperature. For long excitation pulses, the two reservoirs are in thermal equilibrium. In contrast to a picosecond laser pulse, a femtosecond pulse causes a non-equilibrium between the electron gas and the lattice. By pump pulse length dependent optical measurements, we fi...

Ultrafast Demagnetization Measurements Using Extreme Ultraviolet Light: Comparison of Electronic and Magnetic Contributions

Ultrashort pulses of extreme ultraviolet light from high-harmonic generation are a new tool for probing coupled charge, spin, and phonon dynamics with element specificity, attosecond pump-probe synchronization, and time resolution of a few femtoseconds in a tabletop apparatus. In this paper, we address an important question in magneto-optics that has implications for understanding magnetism on ...

Critical behavior within 20 fs drives the out-of-equilibrium laser-induced magnetic phase transition in nickel

It has long been known that ferromagnets undergo a phase transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic at the Curie temperature, associated with critical phenomena such as a divergence in the heat capacity. A ferromagnet can also be transiently demagnetized by heating it with an ultrafast laser pulse. However, to date, the connection between out-of-equilibrium and equilibrium phase transitions,...

Ultrafast magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic materials

In recent magneto optical experiments (TR-MOKE) the timescale of laser induced demagnetization was found to be shorter than 0.5 ps. However, doubts have been raised if the measured signal reflects genuine loss of magnetic moment at all. Also, for these experiments no broadly accepted theory exists. Although a few models are able to fit the data, they generally have in common that they violate o...
